Sculptor Emika Sekine receives the Worpswede scholarship from BURG
The Worpswede scholarship, awarded for the second time in 2024 by the Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle and the Worpswede Künstler*innenHäuser e.V., will go to the artist and Burg graduate Emika Sekine this year. Once she receives the scholarship, she can expect to spend three months working in one of the studio apartments in Worpswede at the beginning of August. In addition to free accommodation, the scholarship includes monthly financial support of 1,600 euros. A budget of 1,000 euros is available for material costs in connection with the artistic work over the course of the scholarship.
Emika Sekine, who completed her art studies at BURG in 2023, impressed with the artistic richness of her works. “In her sculptures and arrangements, the artist plays in a virtuoso way with forms of reality, which she overlays, distorts and rearranges. These rearrangements give rise to an interesting debate between perception and logic. “Your works surprise with their diverse materiality and the research drive they contain,” the jury said in its statement. In her artistic practice, Emika Sekine focuses on the properties of sculptures and “ghosts”, in particular on their correspondence. Using a wide variety of materials and techniques, she deals with ambivalent topics such as past and present, contexts and individuality, fiction and reality, as well as seriousness and humor.
During her stay in Worpswede, Emika Sekine would like to explore the working methods of the sculptors who worked there in the past. Your goal is to research how they reacted to the nature and environment in Worpswede. The artist plans to work with natural forms that can be found locally, collecting sand and earth from the banks of the Hamme in order to make temporary molds. The pressed sand will then be used to cast additional material.
About Emika Sekine Emika Sekine completed her bachelor's degree in sculpture at Musashino Art University in Tokyo, Japan in 2013. From 2017 to 2022 she studied sculpture/metal with Prof. Andrea Zaumseil at the Burg Giebichenstein Art University in Halle. In 2023 she received her diploma in sculpture/materiality and space with Prof. Karsten Födinger. Sekine took part in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Germany and Japan and presented her work in an open studio in Switzerland. She was supported by the NOMURA Foundation in Japan in 2019, 2020 and 2021 for her artistic work and received a grant from the Yoshino Gips Art Foundation for the “Grants for Overseas Study by Young Artists” in 2022. In 2018, her works were awarded second place in the FÖHL Art Prize of the sculpture competition in Germany. In 2020 she took third place in the Münzenberg Forum Berlin art competition (collage) and was nominated for the 26th Federal Prize for Art Students in 2023. Expert jury For the second award of the Worpswede scholarship, Philine Griem (head of the Künstler*innenHäuser Worpswede), Prof. Caroline Achaintre (professor of painting/textile art in the art department at BURG) and Paule Hammer (artistic assistant for drawing and nature studies in the Department of Book Art/Graphic Design at the HGB Leipzig) won a top-class jury of experts. The jury meeting was chaired (without voting rights) by Prof. Tilo Baumgärtel (Professor of Painting and Vice Rector of BURG).
About the Worpswede scholarship The Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle announced the first Worpswede scholarship in 2022 in cooperation with the KünstlerinnenHäusern Worpswede e.V. The three-month scholarship, which has been awarded annually since 2023, serves to provide postgraduate support for particularly outstanding graduates from the Art Department at BURG.
